Demographic characteristics

Victims exploited in the Americas represent about 60 per cent of all registered victims. These victims are mainly registered between 2018 and 2022. Most of them originate in North (42%) and Central (33%) America. In some cases, registered victims are from South-East (8%) and East Asia (5%), or Eastern Europe (3%).

Victims exploited in the Americas are mainly females (82%). 38 per cent of adult victims exploited in the Americas are between 18 and 29 years old. Moreover, children represented about 36 per cent of victims.

Trafficking experience

80 per cent of victims exploited in the Americas are trafficked for sexual exploitation, particularly in prostitution. Another 26 are trafficked for forced labour, mostly in agriculture and domestic work.

These victims are mainly controlled with psychological, physical and sexual abuse (57%), and threats (47%).[1] 62 per cent of these victims are recruited by their intimate partners, family, or friends, and about half of them are trafficked for two years or more.

[1] It is important to note that trafficked persons can be subjected to multiple types of exploitation and means of control, so percentages may not add up to 100.
